ALternative Process

Contemporary artists continue to use alternative photography processes to enrich their methods and expand materials with the wondrous play 19th –century photographic processes which this course will introduce. We will explore Cyanotype, Vandyke, and Salt Printing. In this class we will learn modern photographic techniques to combine with these foundational processes. There are many ways to create work within these processes, students are encouraged to play, explore, and refine methods, materials, and ideas within their finished work.

Beginning with a series of workshops, which cover digital negatives, paper and substrate, and the three foundational alternative processes, students will work independently and alongside peers in-class to demonstrate knowledge of technic and to develop their own studio practice for each process. Students are expected to come to class ready to work, share ideas, keep record of techniques, and share inspiration. The final project will allow students time and space to conceptually develop a project through a deepened exploration of any covered processes or the opportunity to learn from the ample alternative processes available.
